Abstract

The papers in this book represent a significant proportion of the papers delivered at the International Symposium on 'Environmental Technology: Applications in Principle and Practice' held at Merdeka University, Malang, July 1-3, 1996. They are a record of facts and ideas presented by speakers from Australia and Indonesia in an endeavour to work cooperatively in advancing technology, management practices and policy in an area vital for the maintenance of environmental quality. While it is acknowledged that environmental technology and management practices have been advanced in countries like Australia, they may not be directly applicable in countries like Indonesia. Adaptation of these to Indonesian conditions is necessary. Equally it is recognised that there are indigenous technologies and practices which can be improved by employing the science that has been advanced in Australia. Not much has been published in the international literature on technology and practices in Indonesia, and this book represents a contribution to the need in this field. The International Symposium is an outcome of on-going collaboration between Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia and Merdeka University in Malang, East Java. The collaboration had its beginning in the visit of the Rector of Merdeka University to Murdoch University in 1993 as part of the sister-state relationship between the two provinces. Formalisation of collaboration followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for a three year project in 'Improving the water quality of Brantas River by use of technology, integrated catchment management and policy measures'. The International Symposium marked the establishment of a Centre for Environmental Management and Technology at Merdeka University, which aims to be a national centre of excellence in Indonesia and a base for international collaboration. I would like to thank Merdeka University for the organisation of a very successful international symposium, and particularly the work of Ir Tjaturono and his staff. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Australia) provided funding for bringing Australian speakers to the symposium through the Australia-Asia Linkages Program. The collaborative project between Murdoch University and Merdeka University has been funded by the Department of Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs under the Targeted Institutional Links Program. I have been greatly assisted by Ir Laksni Sedyowati (Merdeka University) and Peter Koffel and Bridget Lowe (Murdoch University) in the editing work.
