Farewell Cinderella: Creating arts and identity in Western Australia

Abstract

Theatre, music, literature, the visual arts, dance, radio and television, architecture and religion all contribute to the construction of a cultural identity. This book brings together, for the first time, a range of perspectives on how these branches of the arts and culture have reflected and represented Western Australia's social history, its changing values, its landscape, and its sense of place in the world. Narratives on Western Australian arts and culture by nine writers who are specialists in their fields are complemented by photographs, some in color and many drawn from archival sources. In celebrating past achievements and anticipating those yet to come, the editors of this collection believe that Western Australia can bid farewell to the defensive position that was once adopted in relation to the arts and culture, encapsulated in the term 'Cinderella State'.
