Abstract
One of the main concerns in any electric power distribution system is the reliability of the supply. This chapter discusses different custom power devices (CPDs) and their use in alleviating some of the power quality problems. It presents the use of these devices to dynamically improve voltage profile and unbalance that are arising due to the growth of DERs. The CPDs utilize power electronic based voltage source converters (VSCs). The chapter gives a brief description of the converter requirements and filter structures. Distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) is a shunt-connected device. It can perform both current and voltage control separately. A unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) consists of two VSCs that are connected to a common DC storage. The UPQC alleviates some of the problems associated with the dynamic voltage restorer (DVR). The CPDs is more effective in solving the power quality problems arising from the increased use of DERs.
