Abstract
Globalisation has subverted the developmental state. This chapter explores one of the central issues of this volume: the extent to which global market conditions are producing deep-seated changes in the distinctive form of East Asian political economy, which is given the generic label of the developmental state. A major contention of this chapter is that different state forms are nested within different structures of global governance. From this perspective, the developmental state, and for that matter the Western European welfare state, were both products of the post-war system of global governance. It is this system of global governance that has irrevocably changed and brought with it concomitant changes in modes of domestic governance. In short, it is argued that developmental state forms are rapidly being transformed into a new form of regulatory state.
