Abstract
In recent years, the availability of high‐throughput genome/transcriptome sequencing data and sophisticated bioinformatics tools facilitated
in silico
identification of novel genes for several crops including wheat using well‐characterized genes from other species. The information thus generated may be used for further validation and marker‐assisted selection (MAS), gene editing, and gene cloning. In this chapter, we summarize the available information and developments in this field, in three parts: (i) available databases, tools, and methodology for the identification of genes and the corresponding proteins; (ii) present status of genes and gene families identified in wheat using bioinformatics (including contribution from authors own lab); (iii) use of available information in current and future wheat improvement programs. This chapter is a suitable reference for students/scientists working in the field of plant genomics for the improvement of wheat cultivars.
