Abstract
This chapter focuses on the development in Western Australia of a reintegration program to assist a particular sociocultural group of Aboriginal women, mostly of the Nyoongar people. First there is an examination of aspects of cultural differences that impact upon the successful reintegration of women exiting prison in Western Australia and then an outline of the involvement of the Community and Youth Training Services (CYTS) in the development of this program. The Breaking the Cycle program, a culturally appropriate art-based training program, was designed and run by Aboriginal women and an important feature of the program is the positive relationship developed between the program, the training organisation and the women themselves. The chapter illustrates how this approach helps to retain the women throughout the program and in their subsequent re-engagement with CYTS upon release.
