Abstract
This chapter provides a summary of phytoplasma research in Malaysia over the past decade. It offers an update on the detection and characterization of phytoplasmas from various crops using molecular diagnostic tools. The distribution of the phytoplasmas is highlighted with reference to the occurrence of several groups of phytoplasma in various crops and different states in Malaysia. The diversity of the characterized phytoplasmas and the current status of phytoplasma research are discussed with an emphasis on additional investigations on geographical distribution and epidemiology that are essential to formulate phytoplasma disease management strategies in Malaysia.
