Class and change in rural Southeast Asia
Southeast Asia: Essays in the Political Economy of Structural Change, pp.128-145
Routledge & Kegan Paul PLC
1985
Abstract
Any analysis of the transformation of Southeast Asian societies must include consideration of changing relations of production at the rural base. It is the rural peasantry who bore the brunt of colonial exploitation, whose 'conservatism' has been blamed for the failure of modernization in the post-colonial era, and who have been the most apparent victims of the contradictions of the development process in the last two decades.
