Disability in Australian cinema: Cultural anxiety to diversity

Abstract
One of the theatrical posters for the 2008 Australian film The Black balloon declares 'normal is relative' over an image of the autistic main character running in his underpants wearing bunny ears. The poster is bordered by smaller images of scenarios that we have come to expect in Australian national cinema: love amongst families, outdoor activities and suburban settings. The central position of disability in this film is indicative of its (changing) place throughout Australian cinema's history.
