Abstract

The widespread view that nation-states are in decline derives from two main sources: first, from the suggestion that processes of economic globalisation are eroding the distinctiveness of the nation and the power of the state; and second, from the view that the increasingly multi-ethnic composition of most societies, combined with a new awareness of ethnic rights, is undermining national cultural cohesion.
