Green cities as bird watching destinations

Abstract
Birds have always fascinated people, because of their visibility, colour, song and behaviour. Bird watching is one of the most popular of natural history activities that people from all walks of life pursue. With the general trend towards ever more people living in and visiting cities, increased urban population densities are, however, placing pressure on existing green spaces such as city parks and remnants of native vegetation. By employing ornithologists to advise on the specific habitat requirements of different groups of birds, consideration was given to the layout and design of parks, the importance of connecting habitats to one another and the selection of species for planting. Despite the widespread loss of nature, frequently due to the expansion of cities to accommodate urban development and/or an ever-growing human population, there remains hope and there are positive developments taking place in many urban environments.
