Abstract

In Interpretation Theory: Discourse and the Surplus of Meaning, Paul Ricoeur, modifying Strawson, says that „language has reference only when it is used“ and that „the sense, so to speak, is traversed by the referring intention of the speaker.“ I would like to go further and suggest that in much of ordinary language and certainly in literary reading propositional sense is continuously and fundamentally unhinged on a spectrum of infinite meaning shades from taking for granted the sense of the textual surface to its reversal in ironic speech.
