Abstract
In many human societies it is common to refer to a particular individual as being young or old for his/her age. This implies that there is a quite clearly defined image of the external features, and possibly the patterns of behaviour, associated with particular age groups. Further, it suggests that we are both able and prepared to discriminate between what we observe and the known chronological age of the person in question. The primary aims of this chapter are to examine the criteria on which this judgement is based, and to determine whether past and current methods of measuring and defining biological age can be regarded as credible and reproducible.
