Abstract
In this introductory chapter, we locate the study of analogy and metaphor in science education in context by identifying the seminal philosophical developments in the mid -twentieth century that led to significant educational applications in teaching and learning science. Then the themes of the book and the major issues raised by the contributors are previewed.
