Abstract
This chapter, on microbially influenced corrosion (MIC), presents traditional and new concepts on this topic from the microbiological viewpoint. For the description of the various electrochemical processes involved in corrosion and on the electroc hemical monitoring methods, please refer to the general corrosion literature. Many review articles on microbially influenced corrosion take the viewpoint of metal destruction. This chapter also investigates corroding iron as a food source for hydrogen-consuming bacteria. Some calculations are presented to visualize quantitative aspects of this economically important process.
