Abstract
This book chapter on pan-Asian celebrity is part of a collection of essays that came about as a result of a research project funded by the Australian Research Council called Willing Collaborators: Negotiating Change in East Asian Media Production (2014–2016). The chief investigators in the project were Michael Kean, Brian Yecies, and Terry Flew; the partner investigators—our foreign “collaborators”—were Michael Curtin, Anthony Fung, and Li Huailiang. In an era when cinema, television, music, animation, and games regularly cross borders, pan-Asian collaborations are increasing in numbers. Many factors contribute to the recent popularity of pan-Asian media collaborations; they include the transnational appeal of media content, the ability to leverage foreign partners’ networks of production, ready access to overseas distribution, and attractive publicity vehicles . Adding to these factors is the role of celebrity in garnering media attention and publicity even before productions are released for public screening. With this in mind this chapter discusses the practice of exploiting national stars’ celebrity in pan-Asian audio-visual content. I also investigate how celebrity is used to address diverse groupings of audiences’ desires and expand sales. In particular, I investigate how content that is directed at female audiences makes use of celebrity.
