Abstract

The evolution of the Web into a meta-platform for networked media and communication has provided the conditions for a fertile participatory media environment. We are also, some suggest, in the midst of a cultural shift towards a lusory sensibility, that is, in turn, affecting a playful sociality. In this environment, everyday media users engage in creating, sharing, collaborating and playing with and through media, from personal small media content to pro-am subscriber-based content and the re-use of existing “big media.” In this process, we literally “read–write” culture by creatively remixing our own and others’ media texts. These new communicative practices are part of the ongoing formation of both our online (and offline) personae and communities of interest.
