Abstract

With the rapid decline in costs for photovoltaic (PV) modules and balance of plant equipment, PV power plants have become very cost competitive as a generation source. However, PV plants have their own unique characteristics (such as being diurnal, intermittent, nondispatchable, and inertia less), which can make integration into small standalone hybrid microgrids more challenging than conventional thermal generation. This chapter provides an overview of the key technical considerations required in the planning and modeling of PV power plants specifically for hybrid microgrid applications. Key metrics for planning PV plants suitable for hybrid microgrids are first presented. The implications of hybrid microgrid design on the planning of the PV plant are then examined. Finally, the technical challenges posed by PV plant integration are reviewed, including the management of PV intermittency, dealing with excess PV output, frequency stability, and system strength.
