Abstract
So what will sports journalism be for in the future? Proclamations of its importance bely a long history of journalists being regarded as “disposable and unworthy” and sport as the “toy department”. Challenges it will face will come under the heading of nationalism, race and gender and technology. In spite of increasing awareness of its galloping diversity issues, sports journalism continues to retail nationalism via workforces which remain overwhelmingly white and male and whose priorities and focus reflect that narrowness of intake. While there are encouraging signs of resistance to the glib and instant in longer forms of writing, sports journalism still needs to do a better job of the corruption and sportswashing of questionable regimes and companies which remain endemic in the sector.
