This chapter focuses on resilience in relation to self-control—within the context of impulsivity and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The core problems in ADHD are defined at the outset in relation to neuropsychological correlates and latent factor structure of observable symptoms; changes proposed by DSM-5 and ICD-11 revisions are summarized. The application of personal recovery theories has recently been developed in ADHD, yielding a novel concept of recovernance. Recovernance represents a specific kind of recovery—as a portmanteau by merging ‘recovery’ and ‘maintenance’—denoting that ongoing adjustments are required to maintain functional optimization in ADHD. This is an iterative and unending process, which can be at times exhausting, demoralizing and frustrating for individuals with ADHD. Resilience is hard-earned. As such, resilience in the context of ADHD is a lifelong effortful process, which also requires acquisition and accumulation of knowledge about ADHD, ensuing limitations as well as self-awareness; nevertheless, recovernance can yield mastery, flourishing, and rewards. Parents’ roles in fostering resilience are highlighted. Instead of determinism, resilience in ADHD underscores multifinality by considering different developmental life trajectories—influenced by predictors of interventional, functional, and resilience adjustments. Resilience-based intervention and new research avenues of psychosocial determinants are also discussed.
