Abstract

It seems the most seminal accomplishment of virtual proximity is the separation between communication and relationship. Unlike the old-style topographical proximity, it neither requires that bonds are established beforehand nor necessarily results in establishing them in consequence. "Being connected" is less costly than "being engaged"-but also considerably less productive in terms of bond building and bond maintenance. -Zygmunt Bauman, Liquid Fear
