Abstract

For examining the convergence of tourism with conservation and development, this chapter begins by examining the recent growth in ‘new’ or ‘alternative’ forms of tourism, which are being positioned by the some scholars as being morally superior and responsible alternatives to mass tourism. The chapter then focusses on the emerging involvement of conservation and development organisations in tourism and presents two empirical case studies—one examining volunteering on a conservation project in Thailand and the other studying non-governmental organisation (NGO) study tours organised in Cuba.
