Abstract

This chapter explores the ways in which colonisation has impacted on the lives of Aboriginal women, their health and wellbeing and the diverse ways in which they are and have been positioned and recognised in Australian society. It discusses their traditional and contemporary roles within the family and community and the dynamics of family relationships and extended family life, particularly as grandmothers, mothers and daughters. It also examines the strengths, stressors and strains affecting the lives of Aboriginal women and their families. This chapter maps the impact of colonisation on Aboriginal women, including their sexual exploitation, loss of traditional authority and changing roles in the family and community. In addition, this chapter provides a brief overview of the health status of Aboriginal women related to access to services, cultural safety, health promotion, screening, risk factors and early onset of chronic diseases, with particular attention paid to socioeconomic disadvantage and its impact in a variety of geographical locations.
