Abstract

It is perhaps not too much of an exaggeration to say that The Mahabharata is the founding text of Indian culture. The Puranas, dramatic texts (both classical and modern), medieval romance, the Indian bourgeois novel and finally the Indian film all retrieve the rules of their formation from The Mahabharata. There is something so dreadfully imperialistic about this text that, in a moment of wilful generalization or enthusiasm, we may indeed claim that all Indian literary, filmic and theatrical texts endlessly rewrite The Mahabharata.
