Abstract
Blackwell is what his creators call an interactive virtual character - a life-sized, #-D simulation of a person whose mission is to help train real soldiers. He inhabits FlatWorld, a kind of theme-park version of a war zone run by the University of Southern California's (USC) Institute for Creative Technologies [ICT].
At a time when Hollywood is often tagged by those on the political right as a liberal bastion, ICT teams the military and the entertainment biz for defense projects, funded by a five-year, $100 million grant from the Pentagon - the largest the university has ever received.
