Abstract
We have found spreadsheets very useful for teaching statistics; students learn quickly when typing and debugging formulae. But after a while, it is necessary to turn to a more traditional statistical package for real-world data examination. WESTAT has been developing the MASS system for some years, a stand-alone statistical package of some size and power, and we have used it extensively for teaching. In the past 6 months we (1.5 persons) have ported MASS completely to sit inside Informix Inc.’s new spreadsheet Wingz on the Mac. We discuss some of the techniques enabling this port, indicating how others can do likewise, and its impact on teaching matters.
