Abstract
Enlightenment rationalism has, to a very large degree, shaped our contemporary understanding of democracy and democratization. The key performers in this drama are autonomous social actors who push the state towards democratic forms. The significance of the role played by these social actors varies according to the scriptwriters’ modernization or Marxian preference.
