Abstract
On 7 September 1784 Mathew Carey, the young but lame Roman Catholic editor and proprietor of the fiercely patriotic Dublin Volunteer's Journal, limped up the gangway of the America, Captain Keiler, bound for that asylum of liberty, the United States. Dressed in female clothing, with £25 in his pocket, he had evaded the clutches of the Dublin magistrates who sought him to answer a charge of criminal libel againt John Foster, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons. Carey landed in Philadelphia seven weeks later, poorer but wiser for losing half of his money to a gang of sharpers...
