Some approximation and interpolation approaches to mapping ecological and vegetation variables on a surface are presented. In this connection trend surface analysis based on polynomial regression is shown to be a promising technique. It is reviewed and typical applications are presented. Basic features of the mathematical background for bicubic and triangular splines are discussed. ‘Splines’ is a family of powerful interpolation techniques for mapping of ecological and vegetational variables both on regular and irregular grids.
