Abstract
The rapid extension of the internet and smartphone technologies in the global south has given rise to an emergent gig economy that employs tens of millions of workers across its varied urban centres. Existing research hasmostly focused on analysing the precarity and labour regulation issues of the global North countries. Little is known about how the gig workers in the global south enter the gig economy and navigate the gig economy sector. Within this context, drawing on data from two case studies, this chapter provides an overview of the livelihood practices of the ridesharing drivers in Dhaka and the challenges they experience in their everyday lives. Addressing the employability issues among the migrant workers along the line of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG 8), the findings highlight the challenges and opportunities in promoting sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth.
