Abstract

My paper is about one of Australia's most historically significant publishers and given the international nature of this conference I thought I would begin with a quick overview of the company and some context as to why an Australian publisher would be compelled to set up an office in London during the early twentieth century. From this, I will then relate a moment from Angus & Robertson's history that teases out the tensions that can arise between a publisher's public goal of promoting national culture abroad through text and the more mundane need to turn a profit from the sale of books...
