Abstract

This keynote address introduces the theme of the conference - Changing practice through research: Changing research through practice. Volet asserts that these two aspects of change in research-practice address one of the most important challenges faced by both researchers and practitioners in post-compulsory education and training. She highlights the gap between educational research and practice and focuses on ways to improve the dissemination process. She briefly examines the literature on the development of partnerships and ways to bridge the gap across all educational sectors. The paper is supported by two tables showing recent developments in cognitive and educational research related to post-compulsory education and training, and a diversity of research-practice dynamics. She draws on current research on the topics and concludes that it is necessary to develop a vision of research and practice communities helping each other in their respective professional roles so that, within a diverse and reciprocal environment, there will be better understanding and improved practice.
