Abstract

The assessment of energy demand for communities which do not have electric power or those which have only intermittent power supply is a complex issue for administrators and designers. Uncertainties such as population fluctuations, seasonal demand, increase in number and use of electrical appliances, and generally a new way of life, are difficult to predict. Experience with Aboriginal communities in Western Australia shows that the problem can be approached by identifying different levels of supply according to the size of the community, how pennanent it is and the cost or difficulty in obtaining fuel and maintaining diesel generators.
