Abstract

There is a strong case for open public access to health knowledge to redress the knowledge imbalance between the specialist and the patient. With increasing incidence of cancer worldwide, combined with the fact that the chance of getting cancer increases with age, there is a pressing need for greater accessibility of knowledge on this topic. The World Wide Web contains a wealth of information on the causes of cancer, its prevention and treatment using evidence-based conventional as well as complimentary and alternative therapies. Making this information accessible in a meaningful and user-friendly manner for the cancer patient and their carers is a challenging task. This paper identifies a number of relevant issues that need to be addressed to empower people affected by cancer, and suggests a framework for effective information access.
