Examining the relationship between wind turbine blade performance and tip vortex behaviour in the wake

Abstract
This paper details the results of laboratory tests on a model wind turbine rotor at the University of Edinburgh and examines tip vortex behaviour which questions the assumptions of current rotor performance prediction codes. Results are compared with wind-tunnel data from the Technical University of Delft and simulations from a vortex wake code developed at the University of Stuttgart. A Biot-Savart calculation is undertaken to provide insight into how the observed tip vortex effects may affect the calculation of performance of a wind turbine rotor.
