Abstract

Wireless networks face the challenge of being able to provide high Quality of Service (QoS) to users running different multimedia applications. As the number of applications continuously grows and multimedia users have widely different and contradictory QoS requirements, the task of the network designer in next generation wireless networks is further aggravated. Efficient Call Admission Control (CAC) and Traffic Policing (TP) mechanisms can significantly help towards improving user QoS. In this work, we focus on both the CAC and TP problems. We propose and evaluate new mechanisms which take into account the differentiated service contracts of wireless cellular video users and the Group-of-Pictures (GoP) patterns at the video traces. Both mechanisms are shown to outperform existing work in the relevant fields.
