Abstract
Many types of domestic wastewater reuse systems are currently in operation in Australia. The criteria associated with greywater recycling solely for irrigation, as distinct from combined black and greywater reuse, however, may be less stringent. Further, public acceptance of such a concept is growing with 20% of householders in Perth, Western Australia engaging in this practice even though it is currently illegal to do so. The recent approval by the Western Australian State Health Department for the trial and monitoring of such greywater reuse systems in three local authority areas of the State is seen as acknowledgment of this previously condoned activity. Many of the issues such as the environmental and potential health risks associated with the reuse of greywater are presently being addressed. Many treatment procedures are practiced and actively promoted in Western Australia. In the sewered Perth suburb of Palmyra, the 'Aquarius' aerobic treatment unit is used to treat the greywater from six, aged-person units and reused for toilet flushing and garden irrigation. In Cottesloe, another sewered suburb, a 'Biomax' greywater reuse system is currently being monitored in its treatment of greywater for sub-surface irrigation. These technologies and evaluation of their performance to date are discussed further in this paper.
