Abstract

Anaerobic microbial communities were defined and quantified in samples from labscale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors fed by yeast extract (YE) or by sodium oleate (SO). Specific ONA probes were used to investigate the different groups of anaerobic microbes involved in SO degradation. The adaptations of specific subpopulations to SO were also examined using fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) techniques. The results of these experiments indicated that SO has different inhibition levels on the specific groups of methanogens. Achaea was the latest domain to recover from the inhibition of long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs).
