Abstract

Australia’s natural settings are often the main attractions for visitors. The eco, nature and adventure tourism, one third of Australia’s tourism sector, is booming. The sector is of significant importance yet the dilemma for sustainable management is one of balancing conservation values with the demands of tourism. Worldwide it is recognised that protected areas have conservation and tourism value. Protected area managers and tour operators share some values and objectives but for others they are in conflict. The different objectives often result in misunderstandings and sometimes animosity, which hinders and restricts potential cooperation and collaboration. To improve their working relationship, there is a need to explore their values, objectives and perceptions of each other. This research aims to develop an understanding of the relationship between protected area managers and tour operators in order to conceptualise and develop strategies for facilitating sustainable tourism outcomes.
