Abstract

The Higher Education Report for the 2000 to 20002 Triennium indicates that in the last decade from 1989 to 1999, there have been significant increases in students enrolling externally, and in students enrolling in Masters degrees by coursework. The parallel growth of national and international universities offering flexible forms of course delivery on the Internet, and a view that postgraduate students are generally more able to afford, and more willing to engage with, new communication technologies, provided the impetus for a major curriculum development to be undertaken at Edith Cowan University. In line with the University's niche marketing of the professions, a project, described in this paper, was undertaken to develop over 100 units within 15 professionally-oriented, fee- paying coursework masters degrees for online delivery.
