Abstract

Popular mathematics seems to be not very popular in either schools or society at large. In this paper, we briefly explore the meaning of popular mathematics, and consider some of the ways in which it might be of value to mathematics education in schools, particularly secondary schools. Various kinds of popular mathematics arc identified and briefly illustrated, and the prospects for supporting and complementing the school mathematics curriculum discussed.
