Abstract
The Remote Area Developments Group was established in 1986 to investigate the water and sanitation problems of small communities in remote areas. Extensive community visits provided general insights for specific research projects to meet community needs. Those recommended were: desalination of water by reverse osmosis; solar water heater using plastic pipe for showering; hand-flushed, water-seal, low-water demand toilet which reduces blockage; disposal of wastewater by evapotranspiration; appropriate technology information data base. This paper describes the work on these projects during 1988 - 1994 as a case study of a university collaborating with developing, isolated settlements on research and development in an attempt to achieve improvements in environmental health. A number of the devices were shown to perform satisfactorily in the given social and environmental conditions. However, a longer term evaluation is necessary to understand community acceptance and health outcomes.
