Abstract

The development of giant cells in roots of Impatiens balsamina following timed infections with Meloidogyne spp. occurs by repeated mitosis without subsequent cytokinesis. Wall degradation does not appear to be involved. A comparison of the effects of caffeine on cytokinesis in unaffected root tip cells and the initial events in giant cell formation indicates that inhibition of cytokinesis in both cases occurs by similar mechanisms.
