Abstract

The new “Waalitj” Research & Exhibition Complex built at the Environmental Technology Centre (ETC) in 2001 relies on the principles of bioclimatic architecture for its thermal comfort. The new complex has been designed as a collection of small, pavilion style buildings as opposed to one large building. In this way the resulting courtyard and spaces in between become useful and important niches for other activities, particularly in Perth’s moderate climate. The pavilion style of the buildings is simple but multi-functional and readily transferable to domestic or commercial settings, urban or developing country village contexts. The Whole Building Strategy recognizes that passive solar solutions are rarely sufficient to provide comfortable internal and external spaces at all times of day, throughout the year. In addition to carefully responding to the local climate and using energy-efficient materials, this strategy embraces the benefits of using advanced technologies in building design, construction and operation. The results of a preliminary thermal performance monitoring study are given in this paper. Thermal performance related to solar passive design has been found to be poorer than expected during summer high temperatures and the problems and solutions are identified. Further monitoring is necessary to evaluate the performance of active heating systems in cold winter conditions.
