Abstract
It is difficult to teach data communications because it involves complex, dynamic processes which are not visible to students and are hard for them to conceptualise. This paper describes a project to improve the learning of students enrolled in the data communications courses. In this project the traditional mode of teaching data communications was supplemented by a problem solving approach using OPNET® a soft- ware environment for modelling, simulating, and analyzing the performance of communications net- works. This mode of teaching enabled students to gain experience solving real world data communica- tions problems without requiring the University to invest heavily in communications hardware and soft- ware which would quickly become obsolete.
