Abstract

This study explored the use of an inquiry-based interactive multimedia program to identify the process by which students' higher order thinking skills developed in a science classroom. Videotapes of students' interactions with computers were analyzed to identify the use of higher order thinking skills. The Macintosh multimedia research package "VideoSearch" was used to analyze digital video. The study concludes that when students presented their investigations to the whole class, the role of higher order thinking skills became evident. Through reflecting on their experiences, students were better able to make inferences about the information provided, interpret new information about the program and its content, analyze available information, make judgments about its relevance, and synthesize what they had learned to generate new knowledge.
