Abstract

Critical to any restocking program is an assessment of its effectiveness. Such evaluations can be achieved using bio-economic models. These models require robust information on growth, reproduction and mortality. Historical data on this species in the Swan-Canning Estuary indicates that M. dalli is able to complete its life cycle within estuaries, reaches maturity within 12 months and lives for up to 24 months. Lunar sampling of M. dalli is being carried out in the deep (otter trawl) and shallow waters (hand-trawl net) and historical data are being evaluated to estimate growth and the duration of reproduction in the Swan-Canning Estuary. Analysis of historical data shows a strong seasonal pattern of growth, with virtually all growth occurring in the austral spring and summer (October to February) and very little growth in winter (June to August). These data, combined with information on the costs of aquaculture production provide the basis for a bio-economic model for restocking this species in this estuary.
