Abstract
This workshop is designed for any educational researcher that has ever felt intimidated by journal articles reporting on higher-level statistical analyses. The intent is to make these quantitative ideas accessible to postgraduate students and early career researchers with little or no background in statistics. Using concrete examples from the research literature, we will explore (1) the ideas behind common statistical analyses, (2) the interpretation of the results, and (3) the appropriateness of these strategies to the research questions posed in the articles. At a minimum, this workshop will examine factor analysis (FA), structural equation modelling (SEM), hierarchical (or multilevel) linear modelling (HLM) and categorical variable analysis (log-linear and logistic regression). The workshop is intended to be interactive, and participants are encouraged to contact the presenter with specific journal articles that they would like to examine. Every effort will be made to incorporate these into the discussion. Additionally, participants are welcome to suggest other statistical analyses for inclusion. The long-term goal for participants for this workshop is to encourage collaboration with quantitative researchers.
