Land use and regional meteorology
WA Chapter of CSIRO Alumni: Mid-year Mini Symposium on: Trends of Rainfall and Water Resources in the Southwest of WA (Floreat, Western Australia, 14/09/2017)
2017
Abstract
The southwest of Western Australia (SWWA) has been experiencing a significant decline in winter rainfall since the early 1970's. The region has also experienced extensive land cover change, with an estimated 13 million hectares of native vegetation cleared for agriculture since European settlement. In this talk, I will summarize the latest literature on the effects of such an extensive change in land-use on the meteorology and climatology of SWWA. I will also present some recent work on expected changes to the climatology of SWWA in the near future using state-of-the-art regional climate models.
