Abstract
In January 2002, the Legal Aid Commission of Western Australia (LAWA) introduced an expanded ADR program for family law clients. The new program extended previous models of mediation/conferencing and introduced the concept of stratifications within the model to make it more relevant to a greater number of people. The new model has four levels of conferencing creatively known as ADR 1, ADR 2, ADR 3, and ADR 4. The conferences range in complexity from ADR 1 which deals with ‘simple’ contact disputes to ADR 4 which deal with multi-issued disputes between pre-trial and trial stage. This paper will reflect on the first year of operation and discuss the lessons learned in each of the four categories of conferences. The paper will also discuss how the ADR program has integrated with the family law system in Western Australia.
